The song, written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, was the first Beach Boys single where guitarist Al Jardine sang lead. The Beach Boys' popular 'surf rock' sound, with strong vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting Southern Californian youth culture, reached its peak in 1966 with the release of Pet Sounds, a "pocket symphony" according to Brian Wilson.
