Suicide Squad: The Movie Review
Critics havenât been kind to Suicide Squad, but Iâve been looking forward to this film for so long that I wasnât about to let them dampen my spirits. As a lifelong fan of comics Iâve always had a soft spot for a well crafted super villain and this is a film thatâs bursting with them!
At the centre of the story is Amanda Waller, a ruthless government official who has spent years tracking down and imprisoning the worst criminal offenders the DC universe has to offer, with the goal to create a âsuicide squadâ, a crack team of super-powered soldiers that can be dispatched to combat any new terror attacks, after the events of Man of Steel and Batman Vs Superman.
The squad comprises of lesser known villains from DC's roster, especially characters that have rumbled with the likes of Batman and The Flash over the years, and although you may not be familiar with all the characters, it doesnât make them any less compelling. The standout performance belongs to actress Margot Robbie as the scene-stealing Harley Quinn, and despite having no real super powers of her own she kicks ass like the best of them, with her unhinged sense of humour providing a much needed dose of fun. The same sadly can't be said for Jared Leto, who plays Harley's love interest (and easily DC's most recognisable supervillain), The Joker. Neither sinister nor funny, it's a relief that Leto's gurning version of the Clown Prince has only a minor role in the film as a whole, and it's timely a reminder of what a hard act Heath Ledger must be to follow...
The other squad members were a mix of fun and fails: Will Smith as the gunslinging hitman Deadshot was perfect blockbuster stuff, dropping one-liners like a pro but also serving as the emotional core of the film, as the squad occasionally struggle with what it means to be a bad guy. Jai Courtney's beer-swilling thug Captain Boomerang will probably make a few Aussie eyes roll, but Courtney was a hoot all the same. The other team members are a mixed bag and the film struggles to portion out screen time well, with characters like Katana barely registering amid the whirlwind of action and punchlines. Cara Delevingne as the mysterious Enchantress is probably the biggest misfire on show; the character seems awkwardly one dimensional, and throughout the whole film I just couldnât shake off the image of a supermodel thatâs a bit of a party animal, and whoâs probably a load of fun to have a few drinks with!
5 Reasons We Still Totally LOVE Labyrinth 30 Years On.
It's Labyrinth's 30th birthday and time to rejoice like the legendary David Bowie here!
Can you believe it? The fantasy cult classic that entranced us with its magical maze, wonderfully wacky puppets, ultra-80s soundtrack and the legendary David Bowie in *ahem* those tights (but more on him later) first graced the big screen all the way back in 1986 and it is still one of those precious films that stir up warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgia. Here at TruffleTowers we may be a little older, a lot greyer and a whole heap wiser (ish), but we still love it â hey, maybe even more than back in the day! â so we felt it was only right to reflect on what makes this movie so magnificent.
So, without further ado, here are our 5 reasons why Labyrinth is still AH-mazing, 30 years onâ¦
David Bowie's majestic presence...
Need we say more? Probably not, but weâre going to anyway. The hair. Those tights. That juggling ability (okay, it wasnât actually him but we reckon he can pull it off with panache). Some SERIOUS swagger. Watching Labyrinth, we fear Bowie, but love him too (obvs) as he brings that unmistakable charisma to the role of Jareth the Goblin King. Who else could steal a baby, make a teenage girl tackle death defying traps (not to mention risk smelling hideous for all time!), attempt to possess her forever and STILL win us over? There were whispers that Prince, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson were considered for the role in the early stages of production but we think itâs impossible to imagine anyone else doing it quite like Bowie.
