Guest Post: The Ultimate 80s Christmas List!

These days, it’s all about tablets, smartphones and  gaming consoles. 15 years ago, it was tamagotchis, Pokemon, and Beanie Babies...what about 25 years ago, in the days of yore?  What would have topped the Christmas gift lists of kids in the ‘80s?  Let’s take a look.

●    Super Mario Bros: Mario and Luigi are still popular today, but back in the 1980s, the two of them were revolutionizing video games!  In fact, pretty much anything to do with a Nintendo 64 would have made a pretty prime gift.

●    Cabbage Patch Kids: We have to say, it’s kind of hard to see the appeal of Cabbage Patch Kids nowadays.  But believe it or not, they used to be the hottest toys around -- Maybe it was their winsomely pudgy faces and sentimentally kitschy birth certificates.

●    Charm Necklaces: Charm necklaces had quite the heyday in the ‘80s.  Nowadays, when we think of charms, we think of delicate metal tchotchkes, but back then it was all about colorful plastic charms, along with colorfully chunky plastic necklaces.

●    Jelly Shoes: Okay, this trend has already come full circle.  They had quite the comeback, flying off the shelves of stores like Urban Outfitters a few years ago.  However, they were even more popular back in the ‘80s, and a lot of their popularity today stemmed from nostalgia.  Also notably popular: Jelly bracelets.

30 seconds of pure WANT - Classic 80s Toys Ads.

Remember the days before iPads and Playstations where you had to use your imagination a little or play the game with an actual person in the same room?? No nor me, but apparently they are now retro games and toys!! Whether it was the family favourite board game or your favourite sylvanian family it now seems far more friendly and sociable than shouting at a french 15 year old whose just crushed your kill ratio on Call of Duty. Get ready to hop back to the 1980s, because we’re revisiting some of the best 80s toy commercials. They may have only lasted an average of 30 seconds (Hard to believe, right?) and been packed with loads of imagery, a jingle and the usual fast-talking small print but they live on for years conjuring great memories of enthusiastically writing Christmas lists mid September! So get ready for a trip down memory lane as I show you my favourite toy commercials of the 1980s! So sit back, relax and get ready to remember what playtime was like before technology took over.

Teddy Ruxpin the storytelling bear was one of the most popular 1980s toys. Today, a toy like this would be able to recognize what kids said to him and respond and be completely programmed on some sort of chip. Back in the day, Teddy Ruxpin worked with a cassette tape but we all still thought he was the coolest thing in the world. Can you imagine a toy running on a cassette tape today?
