This movie really took puppetry to another level with all-new techniques to allow those familiar faces to do things we've never seen before... like seeing Kermit actually walking, which took a rotating drum floor, green screen, and 10 hidden puppeteers.
They also actually filmed Ghost of Christmas Past in a tank of water to create the floating effect too. Seriously impressive.
Sir Michael Caine Playing It 100% Straight
The magic sauce of this movie? Michael Caine didn't act like he was surrounded by puppets. He acted like he was on stage at the National Theatre and gave the most incredible performance that creates all the drama and feels.
It's Actually One Of The Most Accurate Dickens Adaptations
For a film where a rat skates on a block of ice and singing vegetables line the streets, it keeps a lot of Dickens' original 1843 lines in there. Having Gonzo read line-for-line quotes from the book gives the whole thing that magical, classic storybook feel. We can't imagine it any other way.
The Songs Are Just Pure Bangers
Composed by Paul Williams, every song in this film is a total masterpiece. From the villainous beat of "Scrooge" ("There goes Mr. Humbug, there goes Mr. Grim!") to the eternal warmth of "It Feels Like Christmas", you'll be humming these all through December. Trust us.
It Balances Real Drama with Pure Chaos
So many Christmas movies lean 100% into comedy or 100% into drama. The Muppet Christmas Carol somehow gives us some deeply moving moments.
Like Bob Cratchit mourning Tiny Tim (who's cutting onions?!) then followed by Gonzo accidentally torching his feet on a flaming hot goose or Rizzo getting stuck in a jar of jelly. It shouldn't work, but it hits every single emotion just perfectly.
