The Weekly Retro Movie Rundown 234

Crunchy crisps and dip! Another retro movie weekend is upon us. Let's go!

With a bump and a flick, we're plugging back in after many years one of our oldest friends, our first game console. Feeling some of the excitement we first experience upon first ever playing on our shiny new system back in the day, we'll dust off the bold and clunky hardware which still feels so familiar in our hands before loading up our game of choice. With each load screen, we find our childhood memories loading into our minds as we dive in, as if nothing had changed around us.

The Weekly Retro Movie Rundown 233

Great balls of fire! Another weekend, another retro movie rundown.

With great gusts and great gales, the wild weather beats and howls at the windows. Hearing the thrashing of the branches and the hollow scrapes of the bins, we'll tuck ourselves in for another night amongst the safety of the sofa and warm glow of the box. Peeping out the window only to observe the chaos and fury of the outside world, before heading back to view the retro movie wonders that will once again be beaming their way into our little world.

Have a happy retro weekend!

Setting off down a local trail, we'll masterfully jump, duck and weave our way through the wilderness as we let gravity pull us ever closer to our final destination. Hitting our final turn like a surfer turning on a wave, we'll rejoice in our success, pause for a moment then think... let's do that again!

"Father of Pac-Man" Dies

Sad news all you retro gamers out there. Masaya Nakamura, the founder of Namco and the man known as the "Father of Pac-Man," has sadly died at the age of 91.

Nakamura founded Namco waaaay back in 1955 when they originally ran children's rides with two mechanical horses on the roof of a department store.

The soon to be gaming icon later expanded into the world of arcade games in the 1970s with Gee Bee and Galaxian in 1978 and 1979. However, it was Pac-Man, released in 1980, that came to define his legacy, going on to become a fixture in popular culture and a household name.

The idea for the game, came from the image of a pizza with a slice carved out and Nakamura reportedly chose the word "Pac" to represent the munching of the Pac-Man devouring its prey.

Launched at a time when there were few rival games, such as Space Invaders, Nakamura was one of the people credited with launching the Japanese videogame industry. In addition to retro icon Pac-Man, Namco also released other arcade classics like Dig Dug, Pole Position, and, of course, Ms. Pac-Man.

In 2008, Guinness World Records named it the world's most successful coin-operated arcade game. It is estimated to have been played more than 10 billion times. Pretty sure we're responsible for a large chunk of that!
